2023 Ford Explorer SUV Review

The Ford Explorer traces its roots back to 1990, when the first generation arrived for the 1991 model year and set the SUV market on fire. The current Explorer is now in its fourth model year and offers buyers a spacious interior with a third row, athletic exterior styling, and three powertrain options.

It's a capable vehicle that's more than capable of getting the job done, especially when the job is hauling a family and their belongings, and there's even a high-performance version, but it's never modest. . Mid-size SUVs are currently in the market.

There are more premium and more refined offerings, including the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Ford has tried to improve the Explorer's competitiveness by rolling out upgraded variants like the off-road-oriented Explorer Timberline. . Still, we still think buyers in this segment should at least investigate other options, of which there are many.

We think the limited mid-range model is the best explorer for the money. The smaller single-turbo four-cylinder engine doesn't pack as much punch as the twin-turbo Bralier V-6, but it gets the job done and does it more efficiently than the larger engine. You can tow up to 5,300 pounds when equipped with the Towing Package. We're also adding all-wheel drive for $2,000.

Furthermore, we believe that the required standard features should be sufficient for the limited time frame. These include a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, 20-inch wheels, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, leather upholstery, a power-folding third row, and upgraded driver assists such as adaptive cruise control. If you want more off-road capability, the slightly more expensive Timberline is a good choice. It is powered by the same turbo four.

What's New In 2023 Model?

The Ford Explorer hasn't seen any performance, capability or technology changes for the 2023 model year, though a new Red Jewel Metallic paint color option has been added to the mix.

Engine, Transmission And Performance

Base, XLT, and Limited trims come with a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, and it impresses the Explorer with a decent amount of torque. A Timberline we tested with this engine hit 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. The most dynamic drivers among us will prefer the King Ranch, Platinum or ST models, equipped with a 400-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine.

An Explorer Hybrid joins the lineup for 2020. It combines a 3.3-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor that produces a combined 318 horsepower. A hybrid powertrain configuration is also available for the Limited and Platinum models, and while it makes sense for those looking to take advantage of its high EPA-rated city mpg, we'd prefer the standard turbocharged four-cylinder. The Explorer rides on a rear-wheel drive platform, but all-wheel drive remains optional. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board. Ride and handling are acceptable and present, but far from fun. The Explorer ST is very athletic, and its extra power and stiffer suspension make it a true performance SUV. When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.

However, once back there, older kids and adults will find that the seat is close enough to the floor to be comfortable. Competitors like the Chevrolet Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas offer more comfort in the third row. We managed to fit four carry-on suitcases behind the Ford's third row, and we fit a total of 31 bags on both rear rows.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPG

The EPA has yet to release fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Explorer, but we expect those numbers to remain the same as for the 2022 model as the SUV's performance hasn't changed. It's no surprise that the Explorer has different EPA fuel economy ratings due to different powertrain and transmission combinations.

The rear-wheel-drive hybrid model is rated as the most economical, with estimates up to 27 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The addition of all-wheel drive lowers the hybrid's rating by three and four mpg, respectively. We tested one on our highway at 75 mph where it only got 24 mpg.

Explorer ST 400 hp We also put the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder Explorer to our highway fuel economy test. The government estimates that this version will earn 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. We saw 28 mpg.

Infotainment & Connectivity

An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot. The system is attractive and responsive, but not as intuitive as we would like. The rotary control will help in this regard. To get the extra 10.1-inch vertical screen, you'll need to upgrade to one of the more expensive Explorer trims. However, every model is available with voice navigation as well as a rear seat entertainment system. In addition to the base Explorer, a 12-speaker B&O stereo comes standard.

2023 Jeep Grand Overview

The 2023 Grand Cherokee is a versatile SUV that sits at the intersection of machismo and elegance. While the base-model Grand offers a package that's entirely mainstream — that is, not fancy — the midrange and high-end trims are loaded with luxury features and high-end materials that make it a clear upmarket player. Despite this upward mobility, the Grand Cherokee retains its trail-busting off-road prowess – it is a Jeep after all.

Three different powertrains are offered, including V-6 and V-8 engines and a plug-in hybrid system called 4xe. The Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV. It's as happy with suburban family life as it is in the wild, and it offers plenty of room for passengers and cargo inside its roomy cabin. But if your family includes more than a couple of kids, you might get more for the three-row Grand Cherokee L (reviewed separately). The Grand Cherokee starts thousands higher than rivals like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade — think of it as the Jeep brand tax — and its top trims cost the same as some luxury SUVs. That being said, we think the Limited model represents the best combination of features, perfecting the base Laredo with more equipment to satisfy luxury buyers.

The Limited comes standard with leather upholstery, power-operated rear liftgate, heated front and rear seats, power-adjustable front seats, interior ambient lighting, automatic high-beam headlamps, remote start and more. We'll start in the spring with the Lux Tech Group II package, which adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, a wireless phone charger, perforated leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, a digital rearview. Mirrors, second row sun shades included. , a 360-degree exterior camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a collision avoidance feature that assists when crossing intersections.

What's New for 2023?

After a complete redesign for the 2022 model year, the 2023 Grand Cherokee sees some changes. Chief among these is that the off-road-focused Trailhawk model is now offered exclusively with Jeep's 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Midrange Limited and Overland trims now come standard with a 10.1-inch infotainment display with navigation. A nine-speaker Alpine stereo system is now available as a stand-alone option on the Limited, while Overland and Summit models can be ordered with a 19-speaker McIntosh stereo.

Engine, Transmission & Performance

Like the previous-generation Grand Cherokee, the new one is powered by either a 293-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 or a 357-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Jeep also offers its plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain, with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and an electric traction motor that delivers a combined 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Engine, Transmission & Performance

The hybrid's motor is juiced by a 14.0-kWh battery pack. Rear-wheel drive is standard with the base V-6, but all-wheel drive is standard on Grand Cherokees with a V-8 or plug-in hybrid powertrain. Several different all-wheel drive systems are available, including an electronically locking limited-slip differential.

With more robust off-road equipment and greater capability, the Trailhawk model includes an adjustable air suspension that provides up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and a detachable sway bar that allows for more wheelbase to tackle rough terrain. Gives. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Grand Cherokee's composed, smooth ride and found both the V-6 and V-8 engines quite punchy. At our test track, our V-6-powered Summit test vehicle managed a 7.4-second sprint to 60 mph.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPG

Fuel economy estimates for the V-6-powered Grand Cherokee are typical of the midsize SUV segment at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive lowers each of those estimates by 1 mpg. The V-8 model is rated at 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

The 4xe plug-in hybrid offers better fuel economy and is rated at 23 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. It comes with a 14.0 kWh battery pack and a 134-hp electric motor that allows the Grand Cherokee to travel up to 26 miles per charge. Jeep boasts that the Grand Cherokee with the 4xe powertrain completed the famous Rubicon trail entirely in its EV drive mode. A nicely modernised cabin replaces the somewhat dated interior of the outgoing Grand Cherokee. While base Laredo models offer the essentials, the high-end Summit and Overland trims will include luxury items like quilted leather upholstery, exposed wood trim, and a high-tech digital display.

The Grand Cherokee is strictly a two-row SUV, but buyers looking for a third row can upgrade to the Grand Cherokee L, which we review separately. We haven't had a chance to test drive the new Grand Cherokee yet, but we expect it to pack more baggage than the last-generation model.

Infotainment & Connectivity

Floating just above the Grand Cherokee's dash surface is an 8.4- or 10.1-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. In-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates is optional, and higher-end models are equipped with a digital gauge cluster for navigation, a 10.0-inch head-up display, and a 10.3-inch in-dash display. Can go for front seat passengers.

While Laredo and Limited models ship with a standard six-speaker stereo, buyers can upgrade to a nine-speaker Alpine Audio setup or a higher-end 19-speaker Macintosh setup.

Driver assistance features like pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and semi-autonomous driving modes are becoming increasingly important to buyers, and Jeep has a more comprehensive suite of standard safety technology to meet that demand. There is a suit.
