In the Mirren movie, a family of teenage heroes led by Billy Bateson/Shazam battle the Daughters of Atlas. A sequel to Shazam! Development began shortly after the film's release in April 2019, with Gaddon returning as writer. Sandberg and Levy (Shazam) were also slated to return by that December.
The title and the rest of the returning cast were confirmed in August 2020, including Asher as Billy Bateson. Ziegler, Mirren and Leo were cast as the daughters of Atlas in early 2021. Filming began this May in Atlanta, Georgia and concluded in August.

My God! David F. Sandberg returns to the director's chair for "Shazam!: Fury of the Gods," the second instalment in Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe series about Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a teenage foster boy. who magically transforms into a superhero. Shazam (Zachary Levi) with a quick name drop.
If we're being honest, most people would say "Shazam!" I didn't expect that he would successfully debut as "Avengers: Endgame" and "Joker" in the same year. Fortunately, Sandberg was able to create something special and deliver a superhero movie that felt completely unique compared to its contemporaries. Now, the team is back and things are getting bigger and wilder than ever.
"Shazam!: Fury of the Gods" stars Angel, Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Lucy Liu, Adam Brody, Faith Herman, Megan Good, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Ross Butler, Jovan Armand, D.J. Cotrona, Marta Milans and "West Side Story" star Rachel Ziegler as well as Dame Helen Mirren because apparently God is real and wants us to be happy. Some exclusive first-look images were made available during CinemaCon last spring, but we were only able to provide written descriptions and observed audience feedback.
Fortunately, now that San Diego Comic-Con is back, we finally got our first look at the official trailer for "Shazam!: Fury of the Gods." Good news, Levi is still the charismatic hero we know and love, and now he's got a whole lot more friends to join him.
Dame Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu are our big baddies this time around, but now that Billy Bateson's entire family might as well be superheroes, Shazam has a super team to help save the world. During CinemaCon, Levy said that reuniting the band was "super dreamy", and Helen Mirren affectionately referred to her co-stars as "absolute babies".
If you've seen Mirren in Kevin Williamson's "Teaching Mrs. Tingle," you know that's the ultimate compliment. The first film had a lot of "mistakes" — moments that influenced Billy's teenage life as well as his adult superhero skills — but his family played a big role in the sequel, "Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” won. But if you're worried that this is going to be a cheesy story about love, family, and friendship, fear not, because we've got the fabric of circles exploding, too. There is chaos! Slaughter! There are evil villains! There are clever phrases! Yes, we need "Shazam!" is called. The movie is ok.
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" will hit theaters on December 21, 2022.
